The moderation policy changes at Meta are deeply troubling and should be a concern to anyone with a conscience. While the fediverse is a decentralized platform where different service providers have different moderation policies, at mastodon.social, hate speech is prohibited, and we will take action on any Threads account found violating our policies. I would strongly urge anyone with a Threads account to reconsider their alignment with the new direction at Meta and move to Mastodon instead.


@Gargron I blocked Threads as soon as it arrived. Meta has always been pretty toxic.

@Gargron Playing individual account moderation whack-a-mole with Threads' much larger userbase is a bad idea and exposes users of this instance to harm. It allows for all sorts of doxxing and dog-piling which individual users from these groups are not emotionally and logistically able to handle. Please reconsider and ban Threads outright. This should not be a "just manage it yourself" situation.

@Gargron Your platform banned me, for disagreeing with a trans person. I have no problem with trans people. She was simply illogical. The decision assumed malice. My appeal was ignored. I cannot recommend mastodon.social either.

@Gargron I have a threads account but Its largely been abandoned for the last few months as I take a deep look at what those platforms deliver for their end users. Threads always had a way more corporate feel to it and towards the end of my usage of the platform, began to be filled with more AI Slop as meta desperately looked to keep the platform alive. This aligns with their current plans of AI personas on their platforms which I cannot support.

Some people may wonder why it's now and not before and I would like to try and explain as good as I can

We are a relative large instance in the Fediverse so that comes with a lot of responsibility in making decisions. One of our main goals is safety but we also want to be open and connective until a certain point

Threads promised to be different and we always kept it with a grain of salt but did let the people decide if they wanted to block or not

The new policy is just far over the fine line

I understand it's rough to lose accounts you follow from Threads but unfortunately it is not worth the risk

Hopefully people on Threads will realize the true origin of the company running their platform and will make the decision to join us here in the Fediverse ❤️ :fediverse:

After close consideration we have come to the decision to block Threads.net instance wide on all related instances

(mstdn.social, masto.ai, mastodon.coffee, pixey.org, gram.social)

The new Meta policy goes against much we stand for and we will not allow to let it spill over to the Fediverse

I just checked the numbers and it seems Threads is the biggest 'loser' here

On all instances combined we lose just under 100 followers spread across all instances

Threads will lose over 13K total

Everyone needs to get off Facebook, Instagram, and threads.

Mark Zuckerberg announced these sites will no longer fact check. So now these sites are no different than Twitter/X. They will be full of lies and hate!!!

PS sell your stock in Meta. It's going to lose value as people leave the sites!!!

Now let’s see what the biggest Mastodon instance does. Is this enough to tip them over the line? Amazing that this level of unabashed fascist policy is what it has to take for the so-called ethical alternatives to block an entity that has literally fueled a genocide and whose business model has always been based on exploiting people. Maybe next time folks will act sooner and deny them their social capital to begin with.
