If you weren't there, it's hard to overstate just how much damage this woman did to gay and trans rights activism in the 1970s and 1980s. Her "Save Our Children" campaign (sound familiar?) caught the ear of Ronald Reagan, who refused to fund research into a cure for HIV/AIDS because they both felt the disease was a form of divine retribution, God punishing the gays for our "sinful lifestyle".
LGBTQ activism wouldn't recover until well into the 1990s and funding was finally pushed into the AIDS crisis when cishet folks vegan contracting the diseases, but that decade and a half delay cost our community hundreds of thousands of lives, and we still feel the hole it created in our network of wisdom and elders to this day.
Rest in piss you monster. I hope Hell is a billion fruit pies.

@ana @RobotDiver I only stayed because it was necessary to connect with 90% of my friends and being mostly a hermit without that tool I’m very isolated. I’ve been well aware of the issues with the platform for years and have tried to make others see it.
I think it’s taken a long time for the mask to come off, as in, unofficially Meta has been permitting abuse of trans people and marginalized communities for years. The community standards were suggestions at best. But still some folks couldn’t hear us pointing it out, which does make me angry. Cause it should have mattered before.
But now that the guidelines officially permit abusive behaviour not just towards trans people, but to other queers and women as well, maybe folks will wake up a little.

@ana There will be limits to what they can do to private citizen’s servers outside of the US. They may go after American companies directly but outside of the US I think all they can do will be firewall us out. So servers hosted elsewhere like Eldritch.cafe or this server may not be accessible to American IPs but won’t catch enforcement action from the US. And there’s always VPNs for folks who want to get around that, preferably also based outside of the US.

@ana It’s compliance in advance. Project 2025 has some truly chilling goals when it comes to Internet censorship. Meta recently onboarded one of its authors into its trust and safety team. The goal will be to remove all left-leaning content, all LGBTQ content, and anything critical of the incoming administration. That’s why seemingly every tech company is making a donation to his inauguration fund. They know what’s coming is bad and they’re trying to buy favour.
Mastodon may be one of the few networks immune to such things because it’s decentralized. It depends on what the laws look like, but corporations will ultimately be punished for not following along with whatever Trump has planned. Even BlueSky, while it looked super promising, is probably screwed, because it’s run by tech investors. They’ll cave to the new administration too, eventually.
