In response to this post

@Gargron I dumped Facebook over a decade ago. Got tired of the opt in whack a mole for privacy. I almost never used WhatsApp and a couple of years ago closed my account. Refused requests to use it again. Never joined Threads. Am in the process of shutting down Instagram - gathering contact info. I liked how I used my locked Insta. It was like a glossy magazine, makers and artists and crafters, etc. I wonder if remaining on Twitter enabled Musk to be where he is today. Will not enable Zuckerberg.

@Gargron Yes, but with a big Asterix.

I'm already exporting my FB data for my two "public" FB pages (one photography and one career) ahead of a likely walk-away, and I am looking hard at Friendica as a probable home.

My personal/private FB page, which is close friends and family, will likely remain as it unfortunately is the place for critical information-sharing between that group.

@Gargron Yes, I requested the Facebook and Instgram information, and I just received the download today. I hardly used Instagram, and I limited my activities on Facebook, never allowing it to become the "Facebook of everything".

I was already disliking Facebook before the MAGA takeover. "Enshittification" is real. I saw serious problems all the way back to 2014 or so, before Trump began to ran, and the Tea Party was taking off, and so on. Managing Pages, groups, and even advertising got to be absolutely crazy, and burdensome. I started seeing serious issues with ads, and bona fide users or accounts, etc. especially when I was also managing a NationBuilder website, which gave me lots of insight between social media accounts, emails, duplicate accounts, phoney accounts, etc.

Over time, Facebook has been taking away our powers in several ways than one, and anyone who keeps investing in it, especially in terms of dollars, is foolish, in my opinion.

My fb account had been dormant for a year, and I hadn't logged into it, so I deleted it entirely yesterday.

I sent messages to people I only contact on messenger that I actually care about talking to so they could find me elsewhere, and I'm deleting messenger at the end of next week.

@Gargron got rid of WhatsApp years ago when Meta changed it's T&C's and the data they collect from your device...and switched to Signal.
Never had an Instagram account, campaigned against Threads, and its federation here - very scorpion and frog allowing its federation. As for Facebook had one 10years ago for the briefest of moments, and under fake details... obviously didn't trust them then, and that was long before the whole Cambridge Analytica disgrace.

I've not deleted FB or Instagram but have stopped using them. FB might get 5 mins at the weekend but that's it. Haven't touched Threads.

WhatsApp I can't walk away from. Virtually everyone I interact with is on it and uses it. Meta can't scrape my chats and I don't join random groups so I'm unlikely to see objectionable content.

@Gargron Just curious; does anyone know a ballpark figure for how much an advertiser pays for an advert on, say FB?

I was wondering whether the Fediverse or some new entity could go head to head with many of the commercial social media companies, all at once, by taking a no-advertising, federated, not-for-profit micro payments approach. Would have to carefully cover (almost) all of the use cases of all social media and be really well designed but the micro payments would just cover costs and not profits, so may be acceptable as a substitute for adverts to users?

Now, WA is a tough one. In The Netherlands, WA has been kind of the de facto standard messaging app for years, even before it was acquired by Zuck.

@Gargron I find myself in a constant back and forth with this. On the one hand, I do barely use Instagram. I have an occasional update post from a trip or experience with my friends and family. My Facebook account was last updated late 2023 and not even for posting. On the other, a majority of my circle revolves around online interactions with Instagram posts. If I were to deactivate or even delete my accounts, the isolation would likely rift my connection to my social circle.

@Gargron I never did Insta, federation made a Threads not necessary. Fb I have to keep a shell account for Fb Marketplace and a few times a year check on my extended family. WhatsApp was a hard enough move to get people to from SMS, very few joined me to Signal. I'm hoping more can follow me here eventually, but microblogging for me will likely remain mostly with internet strangers around shared topics and use messaging for those closer.
