stux⚡'s Post

People from outside the Fedi often say the Fedi is "hard" and takes "effort" and yes I totally understand and we're trying to make it easier

But they do forget the fact that they constantly need to create new accounts on whatever platform because it keeps getting banned, goes offline or a billionaire takes over

In the end, what is more effort? Constantly starting over or take a few minutes to try and understand this network a little bit

There are sooo many websites and articles dedicated to explaining how the works, just take a little time

@stux What takes longer? Learning a simple concept for each network as you need to migrate or one complicated concept that spans a large number of networks but stays the same regardless of which one you're on?

@stux it is is hard because they usually either can't reach attention they seek - thus they are not really in social networks to reach out - or their friends are not there.
And both are fine reasons, I just prefer honesty instead of inventing another reason.
I have heard all these "reasons" over Linux, OpenStreetMap, ecetera.

@stux Our onboarding process under Akkoma/Mangane is absurdly simple.. If they think it’s complex it’s because they’ve refused to give it a shot.. Mine doesn’t even require a captcha or a email confirmation.. Barely an inconvenience as the guy says.

@ezmyrelda @stux I think it's even easier for people who start with the Fediverse without any social media experience.
I started in 2020 and went through the settings calmly and curiously without any prior knowledge.
It's probably more difficult with previous experience with commercial services, because then you expect certain terms that are different here.

@stux it really isn’t hard, but thinking about ways to make it easier is always a good idea

@mkoek I agree!

@stux Migration between servers is a bit fiddly, but Mastodon is basically the same as Twitter otherwise.

@stux The problem is that people who are INSIDE the fediverse tend to explain it in a way that makes a lot of sense to them - because they are already inside. But they scare people even more.
I tried to write an article to help people who want to transition from twitter recently, explaining how they could think of Mastodon as a city and servers as streets:
world.museumsprojekte.de/regis
People from INSIDE of the fediverse immeditely pointed out that I should have said fediverse. I didn't do that. 1/2

@stux for me the Fediverse works almost like Facebook worked in 2010. I sign up at a server, I follow people, I see their posts. Additionally hashtags (topics) exist here that can be searched and followed.
At that time I was new in my class. Classmates asked if I had Facebook. They created my first email address, made friend requests to 70 pupils in my year, they approved and we saw each others posts.
In 2015 I deleted the account because of a significant terms of service update.

@stux There is a blind spot on the Fediverse-migration conversation and that’s with professional artists & writers who need a social media presence to get the word out about their work. They may have built up an audience on corporate platforms who will not follow them here. I am trying to convince my peers to try, but it’s a hard sell—not because it’s “difficult” but because there’s a lot at stake professionally. The ‘us and them’ language can also sound patronising to an ‘outsider’

@stux
I think they also forget what it was like when they were trying to learn Twitter or Facebook or TikTok.

Everything has a learning curve. Most will accept the challenge of learning a new platform if their friends or famous people are going there.

I didn't use Twitter for years because back when tweets were limited to 140 characters (?) the abbreviations and initialisms looked like gibberish to me.

Eventually, I got the hang of it. When I deleted my Twitter account and came here, I had to get the hang of Mastodon, too. Learning can be uncomfortable.

@stux starting again is still an inconvenience - that includes fediverse.

i'm already afraid that one day my instance will go offline. pretty sure the highest risk is that it may happen suddenly and i will be facing choices of starting anew or going elsewhere or gods forbid, returning to the place i'm not fond of anymore. in such scenario i'm not sure if i want to invest myself into another account.

we should have an automatic export/backup feature - to avoid not being left with nothing.
