Awesome disaster preparedness item. This is a battery backed up lightbulb. Stays lit even if your power goes out! Will find the link. I have two, this one and one in the garage. Requires a single light circuit or light fixture. (UPDATE This is the GE LED+ Battery 60w bulb... Get a UL-listed reputable brand of these, there is some overseas not-trustworthy stuff floating around online) #disasterpreparedness #psps #blackout

@ai6yr apparently those can still work with the switch when on backup? which blows my mind
@alec Yeah, it's pretty cool!

Manual antique coffee grinder. No plug! Bartered with a FireTwitter friend. It was their great grandparent's!! #disasterpreparedness
LUCI light. Solar charged inflatable lantern, great for camping/So Cal Edison shutting off your power/apocalypse. #DisasterPreparedness #light

@ai6yr My great grandmother had one just like it. My mother has it now. Not as fancy though.

@ai6yr I remember the first Pete's Coffee selling those back in the late 70's. I'm just going to sit here and pretent that's not where those people's grandparents got them.

@ai6yr Ooh great idea

@ai6yr A common slang term for a winch on a sailboat is a “coffee grinder” due to the similar operation (crank on top). I like to joke that my boat's old school enough that the only coffee grinder is the one that actually grinds coffee!

@ai6yr nice, the cast handle looks nicer than the ones I've seen

this is awesome!
i'm a tea drinker, so i have metal filters. nothing to roast tea leaves in tho haha
.. i have a french press i bust out once in awhile.
and re: blackouts... i have long had a manual can opener. i think i got it when i moved into my 3rd partment somewhere around 1997.. lmao. still works great and it's one of those that breaks the seal instead of cutting the metal, so no jagged edges
could prolly grind beans in a mortar and pestle in a pinch 😂

@ai6yr I have a similar one from about 1850, and it still works.

@ai6yr
yes. beats any #battery backup - and has worked for 130 years - our 1896 manual grinder.

@ai6yr Might be my german butt speaking, but this feels so phenomenally outlandish (literally). The danger of the built-in battery catching fire is higher than losing power often enough here to justify something like this… and even if there was a possibility, it seems that a ~3kw house backup battery would make more sense?
Or a box filled with stuff like USB-rechargeable (Powerbank-)LEDs that could also be used for other things, like party deco or as garden lights during late night summer BBQs.
@Natanox LOL you clearly do not live in Southern California in wildfire country, where the power goes out quite often now because the power companies shut off power to avoid liability/starting fires.

@ai6yr We had one of those at the old house. Don't know if it made it in the move... Very handy, used it during the 2 week power outage. The nice thing about it vs a lantern is it works in the light socket so it lights up the same space.

@ai6yr I have a few of those, and I found to my delight that if you put the base in your mouth and touch an electrode with your tongue, it will light up like Uncle Fester

@ai6yr something that helped us out, these solar lights. If the power goes out just bring them inside for the night. They last all night and are mostly repairable including a replaceable battery.

@ai6yr
The battery doesn't seem replaceable is it?
@alavi No, but the lifetime seems to be decent.

@ai6yr That sounds like a great product. How does it know whether it’s switched off or a power outage though? Or is it an always on light bulb?
@Bowreality It's quite remarkable, actually... it detects whether or not the circuit is powered (or the switch is on/off). We are guessing it has some kind of capacitance circuit involved. It's ingenious, whatever it is!
