i used to have a short talk with any new-to-town coworkers or students at my unis -- there were many of them

i'd stress that if they were ever anywhere in the city & had the sense that something was wrong, or someone was suspicious, they should GTFO immediately. even if that meant breaking into a run or looking foolish or possibly racist. to just get out of a situation if you had any inclination of danger.

Baltimore has problems. but it prepared me so well to deal w the unexpected

I remember seeing a training video
Of a US Marine, demonstarting how to win a fight.
It was excellent!
The Marine was a real expert in knife fights.

Step one, the assailant pulls the knife on you.
Step two. You turn around 180 degrees, showing your back to the guy with a knife.
Step three (this is where you win). You sprint as fast as possible away from the guy with a knife.

this is awesome!

i'm a tea drinker, so i have metal filters. nothing to roast tea leaves in tho haha

.. i have a french press i bust out once in awhile.

and re: blackouts... i have long had a manual can opener. i think i got it when i moved into my 3rd partment somewhere around 1997.. lmao. still works great and it's one of those that breaks the seal instead of cutting the metal, so no jagged edges

could prolly grind beans in a mortar and pestle in a pinch 😂


@rustoleumlove I use a French Press for this too, forgot to take a photo of that! (but nowadays, for health reasons, ALSO run it through a drip filter)

FEMA has a guide -- basically broken down into what to know before you apply, then how to apply

i havent done it myself but have encountered many folks who have and i'd advise ---
contact the personal insurance first, try to remain as patient as possible, and pull on any official strings you can for extra help

@ai6yr the CDC reported that an estimated 7% of US dairy workers *had already been infected with H5N1* by November 2024. (JFC!)

so this thing has been infecting a lot of people for awhile bc of dairy cattle.
pretty good news, IMO, that all of those folks recovered.

last year's insane weather was blamed by some on El Nino

now, they have been predicting a weak La Nina to emerge for a few months, and it just never crossed the threshhold (maybe it has by now tho)

yet, sea surface temperatures? they're not cooling much.
