@ai6yr @gmillikan Just hug each other and cry. It's a necessary process. Next thing that will happen is some kind of monetary relief will be offered. Accept it. Just think about the next few days - You need somewhere to stay, meals, changes of clothing, medications, pet food. This is enough for you to deal with right now. All the best from a survivor of 3 bushfires in Australia.

@Unixbigot Can I suggest having that also in past tense - " The hard step was ..." Jumping between tenses makes it harder to follow the narrative.
You might also consider capitalizing Hard Step, to link it to the previous paragraph.
