In response to this post@ai6yr Fortunately, where I live in Pasadena seems to be below AQI 200, although there is a huge variation in readings from PurpleAir sensors. I wonder if some are actually inside buildings.

In response to this post@michael_w_busch @douglasvb @ai6yr There have been many fires in the San Gabriel mountains, but this one started at the base of the mountains and moved rapidly into Altadena populated areas. The previous fires were almost entirely in the mountains. The Tubbs fire in Santa Rosa was driven by winds into populated areas.

CNN published a satellite image acquired by the Maxar satellites at 10:45 a.m. PT on January 7. They used the short-wave infrared channels to see the fires through the smoke and clouds. It is a devastating view of almost every house burning over most of the western half of Altadena, California.

@alienghic @AkaSci This is the map on Watch Duty. “The fire has been mapped at 10,590 acres by FIRIS OES Intel 12. Please note that fire perimeters indicate the general burn area but do not detail the measures being taken to protect buildings and homes. Even if a building or home is within the marked fire perimeter, it doesn’t necessarily mean it has been damaged or destroyed. These maps are preliminary and may be updated.”

@ai6yr @FinchHaven @Yumquotient @CassandraVert I was looking at satellite images of the area around Sarasota, Florida and they had extensive damage to solar panels in solar farm fields full of panels after Hurricane Milton hit at category 4. I don’t know how panels on residential roofs fared. We have a special radar image analysis method to make damage proxy maps, and areas of greatest damage were mobile home parks and solar farms.
