@c_dan4th @ai6yr They work well; even after the plastic cracks along the corners and the lantern can no longer be inflated.

It just looks less like a jellyfish.

JPL is about half a mile out-of-frame to the upper left side of that Maxar image; which cuts off at Loma Alta Park.

The Arroyo is in between the two.

@douglasvb @ai6yr

I remember the Tubbs Fire burning through Santa Rosa; the Camp Fire burning into Chico; and far too many smaller fires in the San Gabes.

There are so many such disasters happening that I had to think through the list...

@michael_w_busch @douglasvb @ai6yr There have been many fires in the San Gabriel mountains, but this one started at the base of the mountains and moved rapidly into Altadena populated areas. The previous fires were almost entirely in the mountains. The Tubbs fire in Santa Rosa was driven by winds into populated areas.

@ai6yr

I keep seeing streets I used to bike along in the wildfire evacuation zones...

Again: Good luck over there, for whatever it is worth.

@michael_w_busch Thanks. Luck is useful! (although, I don't have luck, or believe it in... what's that saying -- lucky is preparation meeting opportunity?)

Today Holthaus apparently misunderstood this news report about LAFD issuing a call-up order for its off-duty firefighters: cbsnews.com/losangeles/news/la

He falsely claimed on Bluesky that that was a call for volunteers.

May no one clog up the department's phones as a result.

(Many people have already explained Holthaus' mistake to him over there, so I just reported and blocked his account.)

I just saw a widely-shared post on Bluesky that contained disinformation about the current wildfires in Los Angeles.

It may have been a simple misreading of a news story, but a reminder:

Check your sources and do not contribute to inaccurate information spreading.
