@ai6yr Well, they are learning a really hard lesson. Hopefully they survive.

@ai6yr Anyone near there not in an evacuation zone yet, get a go bag (documents, essentials) ready so you can pick up and leave at a moment's notice. Find your pet carriers now and throw in pet food into the go bag.

@mattblaze @Wifiwits @emd If there were actual customer rights so that a person got a full refund if denied boarding, the airlines would let people know before purchasing tickets. There should be a box folk have to tick before buying: do you have this approval, do you have 6 months left on your passport...anything that would affect a person's ability to board a plane with their purchased ticket.

@mattblaze @emd It's too late if a person is checking in...you can't really sit in pre-boarding for 3 days.

@emd @mattblaze Ugh, that will add to the mess. I imagine they might have a period in which they are lax with enforcement while the word gets out. When the US suddenly demanded that Canadians needed passports because they were blaming us for 9/11, there were a few months in which they gave people a hard time (because US border guys are arrogant asses), but then would magnanimously let folk through, even though that was what they were supposed to do.

@CStamp @emd I think the likely scenario is that the airline will send your info to the UK when you check in, and if you don't have an ETA, they'll tell them to deny boarding until you get one. And if you can't apply and get it approved then and there, you're probably screwed.

@badtux For some countries. @mattblaze

@CStamp @mattblaze The ETA appears to be required for all visa-free travel to the UK other than UK citizens and Irish citizens travelling to the UK from Ireland. It is not targeted at specific countries such as the USA, it is required for all visa-free travel to the UK.

@badtux @mattblaze Yeah, it seems retaliatory crap. :(

@CStamp @mattblaze ESTA has been in place for visa-free travelers to the US since 2008, I believe. They recently raised the fee from $14 to $21 back in 2022. The UK ETA doesn't appear specifically retaliatory in nature, since it applies to all UK visa-free partners of which the US is only one.

@mattblaze I really hope that folk are told this is needed by airlines before folk can buy tickets.

@CStamp @mattblaze nope I just bought a ticket that connects thru LHR, they said nothing.

@mattblaze It's nothing I had heard, so you were sharing useful information. If that's too much for some, well, that's on them. :)

@mattblaze I haven't travelled in a few years and have never had to have my face scanned. If that is now necessary, I'll have fun exploring Canada, it's a big country.

@mattblaze LOL. "If you cannot use the app You can apply online."

Click the link, it gives a bloody QR code to download the bloody phone app.

Way at the bottom, "I cannot apply on the UK ETA app."

Click this, you go to a page "Help downloading the UK ETA app"

Way at the bottom of that, "Continue application online," taking one to instructions that include "scan your face with your device."

What a freaking nightmare.

And no to a face scan.

@mattblaze I really hope that folk are told this is needed by airlines before folk can buy tickets.

@mattblaze Ugh. Canada, too.

"You can apply online using the U.K.'s ETA app for Android and iPhone." This sounds like quite the future security breach. :(

"Those applying for an ETA provide their biographic, biometric and contact details, and answer a short set of security questions. This will increase our knowledge about those seeking to come to the UK and prevent the arrival of those who present a threat."

Guess I won't be travelling to the UK.
