I almost feel like a "dirty" choice here :blobblush:

Even Microsoft did a better job at offering options (of course only because the EU made them)...

@stux As someone who hasn’t been on .social in years, it feels like the dirty choice to me. A lot of out of pocket and rude posts I see boosted are from .social. It seems like the closest instance to conventional platforms and their toxicity. It makes sense because most people will go to the biggest server, but bigger doesn’t always mean better.

by Phillip ;

@stux How about a short questionnaire that helps people get where people they associate with would be. Then give suggested instances.

I'm on this instance because I've been part of the InfoSec game since the end of the 80's. But I'm also into common lisp coding and some other subjects. And I know relatively where those people can be found.

Newcomers might find it harder to find their niche, and find it harder to find their way. I know at least one person here from X who has not been successful finding their niche. They joined a non-specific instance and can't see how I could possibly find this social or enjoyable.

@stux that button should lead to a list of servers with some basic filters and a search option.

@stux To be fair, that makes it simple for people who may struggle with the complexity of the Fediverse. People who may be migrating from other platforms are not used to have other chose a server.

@ln Yes but a curated list and random would be better 😉

So always link to registration page but random based on a list so it's safe

@stux I've seen my wife struggle to pick a Pixelfed instance. Having to chose really is a turn-off for people, so I'm okay with there being a default.

@stux I feel like hitting a new user with a mountain of choices from the get-go will turn them away. Sensible defaults are good for onboarding.

If I try and get my elderly relatives onto here, and the first question they get asked is “ok which of these 12000 servers will you be joining”, that tab is getting closed immediately.

@stux @briankrebs Selecting a server is confusing to people. “Why do I need to choose a server, and which should I choose?” There’s no simple answer to that, and it’s a barrier. I’d get rid of the server terminology entirely and use the word group instead, where each group describes an interest, region, etc. Federation has benefits, but it makes onboarding harder. Not great for user acquisition.

@stux At least you know where people who take the easiest route go.
