Hmm.. 🤔

TikTok can be banned, Twitter can be banned, Meta can be banned even Bluesky(major network parts via the official company) can be banned

If they want to ban the Fediverse, they'll have to ban each server within the network of tens of thousands

Somewhere in there is a point I guess :blobcatgiggle:

@stux for that to work though people need to stop concentrating in the main instance (mastodon.social)

@tsadilas True, true but still

IF that will get banned they can simply move and tada 🎩

@stux Sure, but I guess most fediverse instance admins aren't up to fight with the US or any other major government compared to big companies

@tikend Not in legal matters, but the US cannot force me to do anything

They'll have to go via their Dutch partners and even then....

Catch me if you can :blobcatgiggle:

@stux Governments don't need to ban to hurt the Fediverse. 😑
This new OSA law in the UK is quite problematic. I think I've seen an announcement of a Mastodon instance stopping because of that law.
Here a web-link at Lobsters (hobby project, invite only Reddit alternative) lobste.rs/s/ukosa1/uk_users_lo Lobsters and HaikuOS forum want to geo-block UK for the moment because they see no other option regarding this UK law.

@stux Hmm. I think they could simply ban social media apps. That wouldn't kill the fediverse completely due to web apps, but it certainly wouldn't help things.

@stux I guess an alliance of nations could make a law declaring operating, hosting or signing up to a Mastodon sever a criminal offence. The software itself would probably still be operated at the fringes of the internet for some time, but Mastodon as a true social network would collapse instantly.

So, no need to get all too cocky.

@stux @briankrebs I’ll add to that. In the US, for-profit social media companies and media outlets are rushing to appease and self-censor. Fediverse servers have no pay-to-play incentives.

This post makes you think of dark times in history. Secret printing presses. Pirate radio. Hope we are not headed there again, but good to be thinking about it and prepared if we are.

@mastodonmigration Right!

I was even talking about Tor a little while ago, wtf

It has gone too far already

@stux @briankrebs

Twitter, Bluesky, and Facebook are American companies. They already are banned in many places outside the US. In the US they have First Amendment protections.

They, unlike TikTok, aren’t controlled by the PRC.

I’m unaware of any independent mastodon servers in the PRC.

@stux the point is Twitter and Meta SHOULD be banned. Problem is I have to block all social media at work because of the lack of controls for filtering out porn on fedi servers.

And don't forget that XMPP is invincible just like fediversu

@stux Don't forget that the Fediverse is objectively better due to the fact that it's not exploiting its users through algorithms! That's one really underrated aspect of the network IMO.

@stux They just need to ban clients (apps) and access points (websites of said services). And when both App Store and GooglePlay Store are both American controlled that part is easy. Websites, slightly harder but they can do it as well. That shows a greater issue with the way how certain tech companies have too much control over people.

If you can't access all the servers they can't control, people won't be able to reach them either. Very few people are willing to sideload or bypass things.

@stux they just make hosting those illegal and go for some of the admins. The rest will "voluntarily" shut down their instances.

They can ban the protocol, they can ban encryptions, they can enforce backdoors, they can force identification, they can harass admins with fake chages, seize servers, etc, etc.

Never underestimate motivated (crypto-) fascists.

@stux I was in Beijing last week, and fedi domains weren't blocked. I have only tested a couple of them though. Google, Proton, WhatsApp, Telegram were blocked. That being said, fedi's spared because it's small. It's trivial for states to expand the blacklist by 10,000 more IPs and block the entire fediverse. A p2p solution is a lot more resilient.
