TikTok was banned in the U.S. not because it was a data privacy, disinformation or political concern. If the American government truly cared for that they'd regulate their own networks.

TikTok was banned because it wasn't an American data privacy, disinformation or political concern.

@ErikUden TikTok wasn't and isn't banned in the US, AFAICS. There is a deadline looming on the 19th of January 2025 but that would "only" cause the app to be removed from app stores. Those that have the app installed can continue to use it. See also axios.com/2025/01/13/tiktok-ba

Banning a single company, TikTok, is a "Bill of Attainder", illegal in the US under the constition.

Particularly since corporations are considered people.

.

So how is this possible.

@ErikUden right? Quite a bit of what I’ve heard given as reasons to ban is true of pretty much all social media.

I didn't realise America had any data protection laws. 🤷

@ErikUden data exfiltration is a real risk. Yes, US data is safer. Bunch of countries have local data laws for the same reason. China is an adversary in the cyber security space. Stop being naive

@ErikUden The owners of the US government can not accept a popular information channel they can’t curtail or steer.

If mastodon ever reaches that level of influence, something similar will happen to it… but adapted for the decentralization

It's amazing that things like

wikipedia.org/wiki/Devious_lick

just disappeared from collective consciousness the minute TikTok stopped being so fucking obvious about what they were doing.

People love their dopamine dispensers so much they'll rationalize anything.

@ErikUden The fact tiktok would rather SHUT down all its operations than move off of chinese controlled soil really says what the companys true values are

Mary Austin VOTED 4 HARRIS!

@ErikUden
Yes, TikTok is limited as a foreign owned company in the amount it can use to "lobby," i.e. openly bribe, our legislators. They are working around that as best they can.

There should be consequences both for TikTok and for the US companies that invade our privacy, attack our democracy, and spread life threatening disinformation. But our legislators are much better paid to ignore the problems created by Meta and Twitter.
