A lot of large sites with cafes and canteens moved from it being a joint benefit of cheap food and stopping people going off-site for longer and drinking in pubs, to a profit centre that was outsourced to the usual suspects who lowered quality and staff wages.

Imagine the Silly Valley monetization model as applied to a coffee cup.
It does one thing. You can't sell accessories, just replacements that will potentially work just as good as new for 40 years. Turn into a fashion accessory with new designs, sure, but the *core functionality* is a mature product.
But that doesn't stop the AI bros from trying to sell you the AI-assisted cloud-enabled coffee filter …

This observation prompted by using a simple, single-purpose electronic tool that rocks it like it's the 1980s again—in other words, it does just one thing and does it well without hand-holding and interruptions and attempting to rope you into a conversation with an amorous customer relations database.
