In response to this post@ai6yr @j Ah! Good to know. We may have to purchase something like that for our cottage. I think the stuff in the fridge is likely not salvageable with us not having power for at least 6 hours or more.
@RestlessLipSyndrome @j In Hawaii's temps? Oh yeah, that is going on too long. Hope the freezer holds up, I use the ice cream as a measure of safety. (ice cream didn't melt at all? GOOD! Melted: OH CRAP) - some people put a marble at the top of a frozen bottle of water, if the marble dropped to the bottom then you know your freezer was bad at some point.

In response to this post@ai6yr As someone who may have an extended power outage today, I would love to know more by what you mean?
@RestlessLipSyndrome @ai6yr *I think* he means turns the temperature down (colder) on your fridge so it kicks on more frequently, but chances are this is something you’d have to do when one get a PSPS alert.

In response to this postWe have lost power in Kihei. Multiple reports of power being out around the island. The wind is very violent right now so it is very likely that tress and powerlines are down.

I am not an "early riser" but I have been wide awake since about 4am HST due to rare thunder and lightning we are getting. My cottage is SHAKING! I know I had mentioned how dry it has been here on Maui, but slow and steady rain would have been nice instead of some of the torrential rain some parts of the island are reporting.

In response to this postI know the rules are different now, but his stints were in the late 90's and early 2000's.
Joining the fire crews is voluntary, and at least for my dad, it was life-changing. He is an old man now and still talks about that time in his life with fondness despite being locked up.

I am seeing chats about the ethics of using prisoners for firefighting duties.
My dad went to prison twice in CA and worked the fire crews both times. I can't overstate how much he loved the experience. He LIVED for it when serving time. It was meaningful work that got him outside and exercising. Everything he did had a positive impact. If he didn't have the felonies on his record that sent him to prison in the first place, he would have likely gone to CalFire and called it a career.
