@MostlyHarmless There only is "a single automated phone system"! ALL customer service numbers in the world connect to the same huge switchboard in [undisclosed location].

Realizing this will clarify most of the mystery and frustration of ringing up one of these numbers.

@ChrisMayLA6 When I worked non-gig economy jobs in the non-profit sector I always had to wait at least two weeks to be paid. Even though it was my money. There never was an option to be paid immediately or in 3 days.

(And I'm not saying that there isn't exploitation and abuse of workers, because there is.)

@Bodling

Ah, yes but in the gig economy each shift is treated almost as an independent contract; so its not as if you're swapping delay fro continued employment....

@mattblaze I happened across news of this a while back when looking for something else for a trip to the UK. Indeed, poorly publicized.

My personal gripe about it is that unwary travelers will show up and be politely asked, "Have you an ETA?" To which they'll respond, "Yes, indeed. Scheduled to arrive at 11:30 tomorrow morning." "No, have you secured an ETA." "Yes, that's what I just said: tomorrow morning." "You need one now before you leave." "Do you mean an ETD?" "No......"

It'll be Abbott and Costello all over again.
