@sarae When I was regularly taking lunch into work, I used a stainless thrift store fork. I still have that thrift store fork. I did not use about 600 plastic forks during that time. If you lose a thrift store fork (which you paid 25 cents for), big deal! I cringe when people give out plastic silverware.

@ai6yr I have one drawer that's just thrift store utensils, which are to go in lunches or out on loan like this

and one drawer of "good stainless" that stays home (missing a couple of spoons but mostly intact)

it's fairly straightforward to serve lots of meals without generating any non-compostable refuse, but it's just not something people think about much

@sarae Yep... boggles my mind. Also have cloth napkins that go out and come back and get thrown in the wash. At least it seems the kids have picked up the habit!

@ai6yr @sarae

i actually started carrying around a fork, knife & spoon in my messenger bag, which i usualy have with me most places i go.

i have a few buddies who do this too!
one of my friends bought herself a little bamboo set with a carrying case, while mine are just from restaurants i used to work at, with a bag i sewed from scraps.
either way a person wants to do it, i hope more folks adopt this habit.
*i'm also lucky to live in a city where you can say 'no utensils' and they listen

@rustoleumlove @sarae I carry portable camping chopsticks in my backpack, LOL.

@ai6yr @sarae I have a favorite spoon I swiped long ago from a PanAm flight. Unfortunately it isn't branded.

@StumpyTheMutt @sarae Oooooohhhhhh... PanAm silverware. Highly stylish!

@StumpyTheMutt @ai6yr I had a thrift store sterling PanAm fork for a long time -- my mom was a stewardess and then a purser with PanAm in the 60s and early 70s

they had super stylish cutlery

Back when I had a desk (& ate indoors with my bare faceholes hanging out) I had a complete place setting that lived in a drawer.

I also got in the habit of carrying a clean kitchen towel for washing my hands & cleaning up.

I have one of those, too! I must've used it for 30 years. It just went into the box of desk stuff I brought to the next job, each time.

@Frances_Larina @sarae Also, feeling pretty good about it nowadays with the whole micro-plastics and flame retardants in black plastic problems...
