There are probably some billionaires who donate to Democrats at least partly out of genuine concern for the environment, rule of law, or social liberalism. But I think a greater reason billionaires support both parties is to use centrist Democrats to shore up the status quo against the Left. Both parties are useful to them in different ways: milquetoast Democrats as a form of defense, and the Republican Party for going on active offense against workers and public goods.

The Democratic Party disappoints us so frequently because it's what remains after principled Democrats who'd fight for us—and who therefore threaten the rich—are swamped by opposition spending in primaries (Cori Bush) or if that fails, locked out of leadership (AOC).
This frame helps clarify that the problem isn't that individuals like Pelosi and Schumer just happen to be bad. Rather, the party is the outcome of a system of billionaire spending that filters out anyone who wouldn't be like that.

Incidentally this point resonates with me a lot:
“while it may be uncomfortable…to share a subway car with people who are mentally ill and don’t have anywhere else to go, that’s a reason to improve housing and social services, not a problem inherent to public transit.”
Could also be written about the discomfort in sharing a sidewalk, bus bench… when we don’t meet people’s underlying needs it pushes us toward giving up on urban public space altogether.

interesting argument for the left to lean into making public transit great to beat back the right. https://newrepublic.com/article/189842/public-transit-democrats-trump-climate
