There are probably some billionaires who donate to Democrats at least partly out of genuine concern for the environment, rule of law, or social liberalism. But I think a greater reason billionaires support both parties is to use centrist Democrats to shore up the status quo against the Left. Both parties are useful to them in different ways: milquetoast Democrats as a form of defense, and the Republican Party for going on active offense against workers and public goods.
