@malwaretech ayyyy, finally someone else says it
every time I'm like "commercial VPNs are basically a scam, they trick you into thinking you need them to be secure" I get a shit load of sealions and abuse over it, plus contrarians coming up with convoluted threat models that no real people have, it's become even more tedious than trying to explain why you don't need to smash hard disks or do 13-pass wipes and other unhinged shit
@gsuberland @malwaretech What's next Graham, you're gonna tell me the brick of home-made thermite sitting on top of my hard disk isn't necessary?

btw for this entire week if I'm posting unhinged shit you've got no idea the context of, you are safe to assume that GDQ is involved

one of the guys on the couch on this Rocket League run has spent as many hours playing the game as I have working throughout my entire career

@gsuberland RL is a game that makes fun when played with friends even if one loses. Like I do. Continuously. But my friends no longer want to play RL with me. Probably because they lose too

@SnoopJ @tef @iximeow this. I would have enjoyed the weird and complicated tech if I understood the actual *point* of the category overall
I don't need a full explanation of all the details, that's basically impossible in a TAS lol

@tef @iximeow it took them until 8 minutes and 30 seconds into the run (plus pre run intro time) to say the phrase "no A presses".
it would have been a three sentence explanation at the start. they just didn't explain at all.

@iximeow @tef and, like, I know what a TAS is, and how it works. I just don't know what the specific category for this game is about, or what the rules are, which is pretty specific knowledge (and two phrases from a video that went viral on 4chan and tumblr eight years ago isn't really what I'd call "mainstream" knowledge, or a particularly good explanation of what the category is about)
@gsuberland @iximeow
it's a balancing act, gdq doesn't stop to explain what a backwards long jump is each and every timeāin this instance, the first level shown was a 0 a-press level, and they only started explaining what 0.5a presses was when it came up in the level, which isn't the best
but there isn't a lot of time to front load explanations, and there's often something else going on too
and again, it isn't "went viral once" / "one video"

@tef oh no I love a good deep dive, that's exactly my jam
but like... "here's our TAS! it does a thing very slowly and we aren't going to explain the point or the rules" is not a very good fit for a GDQ audience

@tef that would be fine if it didn't result in a really dull TAS segment due to lack of context
@gsuberland i doubt you care, but for posterity, here's some context https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpk2tdsPh0A

like apparently this is part of the standard rules for the fewest A presses category, because you can keep A pressed between levels and it'd mess up the IL scoring if they didn't count the presses this way, but I had to find that detail out by reading chat.
I'm sure they're great TASers but this was poorly thought out. it's also remarkably dull to watch unless you know all the technical details, which is sort of problematic when they didn't even introduce the point of the run.
