"MD Anderson is one of the best cancer centers in the nation, offering cutting-edge treatments that attract patients from around the world. But that treatment is likely out of reach for millions of people covered by health insurance plans through the Affordable Care Act.

MD Anderson for years has not accepted any individual health plans offered through the Affordable Care Act marketplace..."

It's not just insurance companies.

@ChuffMeister

I asked my (Catholic) anti-choice parents a few years ago about why people shouldn't be able to get abortions if they weren't in the right space to raise a child and they basically said this was their penalty.

@bicmay @ChuffMeister

So, child as punishment?

Funny how the sins of the father never fall on the father.

I grew up surrounded by that thinking. It took decades to come out from under the toxic mountain of it all.

Impacts on sexual freedom, self-image, understanding of gender-based worth and fighting out of that. Learning to be generous to other women.

It was a whole mindfuck.

"Infectious disease experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention made a list of recommendations following their visit, including one to launch syringe service programs to stop the spread at its source. But...politicians...contend that such programs encourage illegal drug use."

They learned nothing from Indiana's HIV and hepatitis C outbreaks.

"Starting this month, pregnant Iowans on Medicaid have 12 months of coverage after giving birth, a significant increase from the previous cutoff of 60 days.

Iowa lawmakers approved the change in the last legislative session, making the state one of the last to approve the extension after the federal government started offering permanent matching funds in 2021 to states that extended coverage to 12 months."

@bicmay oh my, you need to give birth to get 12 months of health coverage? In Spain you get free healthcare (free as paid by the state, which means taxpayers) once you have permanent residence address. Your family or working status doesn't matter. Every resident deserves a public healthcare.

"Federal officials are cracking down on poultry operations looking for taxpayer relief from bird flu losses and will now require a biosecurity audit before insuring birds against future avian influenza outbreaks.

The new requirement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture is an effort to stamp out the nearly 3-year-old outbreak that has claimed 128 million birds nationwide. Infections continue in several places, driving up the cost of eggs and meat."

@bicmay

You know if we turned away from industrialized meat production, and sort of got agriculture back to a small scale multi crop farm operation where they bring in ducks or chickens to eat all the pests off a crop and fertilize it at the same time and also eat weeds like they do in Thailand, we’d probably have a lot less concern over birds raised for food or eggs.

Farmers would certainly need a lot less fertilizer and pesticides
