"No, I don't #convert fractions into decimals," Molly said firmly. "It's dangerous magic. And who needs it? Look how neat and helpful this fraction is: one-third: number one sitting nicely on top of number three. Cut a sandwich into threes, easy peasy! Fill a cup one-third full--no problem. But just try to convert that to a decimal: there's not paper enough in the world to do the math, or time--the task is infinite. No, I'll stick to the finite, thanks very much!"

As I drew near the girl on the sidewalk, she #cocked her head as if straining to hear something. She looked at me curiously.
"You're significant," she said.
I didn't know whether to be flattered or offended.
"What makes you say that?" I asked.
Her eyes were distant for a moment--again, like she was listening to something.
"It's the music. It lets me know when I'm in danger, when something funny's going to happen--and when someone important to the plot's appeared."
