As I drew near the girl on the sidewalk, she her head as if straining to hear something. She looked at me curiously.

"You're significant," she said.

I didn't know whether to be flattered or offended.

"What makes you say that?" I asked.

Her eyes were distant for a moment--again, like she was listening to something.

"It's the music. It lets me know when I'm in danger, when something funny's going to happen--and when someone important to the plot's appeared."
