This rant brought to you courtesy of the first episode of Man on the Inside. I love Mike Schur, but those were some truly epic “relating to teens as real people” fails. The teens were props instead of characters, and the show was all “Har har, isn’t it hard to parent teens??” For a showrunner who’s usually great at portraying humanity, it wasn’t a stellar showing

If you want teens to talk to you, you actively listen when they’re toddlers, and when they’re six telling you about a Disney movie, and ten telling you about their sports practice, etc.

If an adult sends the message to a kid “I’m not interested in what you have to say,” there’s no reason for them to trust you when they’re 13 or 16

I teach violin, so of course there’s a time & place. Sometimes a child needs to stop talking so that learning can happen. But we can do that without giving them the message that what they have to say doesn’t matter.

It’s pretty simple to say “Tell me this story right after we do [whatever]!” And then follow through

It’s true for the quiet kids, but it’s also true for the talkative ones who seemingly will talk to ANYONE!

I don’t ever want to be the adult that tells them that what they have to say doesn’t matter, that they should shut up and make themselves smaller

I wish more adults realized what an incredible act of trust it is when a child decides to share any part of their life: a story about their day, or talking about whatever game or show or toy or friend they’re excited about. If a child is talking to you, they trust you, and that’s incredible

What’s interesting is that he’s playing with Martha Argerich, who has recorded this sonata with **checks notes** half of the violinists on planet earth

And I *do* like Argerich’s Prokofiev

Doing a very late listening practice session, and dear lordt I do NOT care for Ruggiero Ricci’s interpretation of the Prokofiev D Major violin sonata. It’s so harried and rhythmically undisciplined in a way that doesn’t work stylistically, IMO.

Starting to go down a dim path mentally, then remembering I have a playlist of songs that help me feel calmer and cozier. Turning on music doesn’t fix everything, but it helps my body in the moment

Irish creator posting a video of the horrible snowstorm they got in Ireland this week (they had at least ten flakes that didn’t melt when they hit the ground)

Commentors from places with snow: We call that a dusting!

Commentor from the southern US: Don’t feel bad, that would shut down Atlanta for a week

@mkelly Neighing & whinnying are both loud vocalizations, relatively uncommon and meant to carry over a distance. A nicker is a softer sound a horse will make when it’s close to the person or animal it’s communicating with

@mkelly I mean, at least that is the correct term for that particular horse sound!!! 😂 (Horse terms are universally ridiculous… why count height in hands?)

Man: Was a woman talking? I didn’t hear anything **proceeds to walk straight into the wall**
