Dear Graduate student,
Are you overdue for a thesis committee meeting, but feel like you have nothing to show since your last meeting? I'm begging you to schedule that meeting now!
Either, your research is languishing and you need help! This is what your thesis commitee is for.
Or, you are doing fine and the committee is there to tell you that.
Future you will thank you.

We're entering peak faculty interview season in my field.
One of the most common ways a candidate is derailed during the interview is not deflecting aggressive questioning during the seminar or chalk talk.
Although this may be a sign to run, the questioner might not even be a part of the interviewing department.
To prepare, I suggest this amazing guide on how to deal with derailing questions during a talk from
UCSF.

#LabLife PSA-Standardize figures in your lab. Figure out what size micrograph generally looks good for your type of data, what size band etc.
I have a figure template that lays out panel sizes for micrographs with the preferred scale bar, band sizes for western blots, font sizes for labels and shows column widths for standard journals.
It makes it easy to move panels between different lab members or take panels from two papers for a single figure in a talk.

@ai6yr
These are growing in cardboard I collected at work, in a bucket I collected at work. It's my little nod to sustainability. We have so much cardboard and brown paper from deliveries and empty buckets once we use up non-hazardous chemicals, it seems criminal not to reuse them somehow.
I also use the cardboard in my garden and have used buckets for pots--but hubs hates the look, so I switched to real pots.

Mushrooms!
This is the second flush off of this bucket. Only one bunch, but that's probably because we were out of town. It looks like some of the holes were pinning but the pins died because they didn't get watered.
In the companion bucket, one bunch fruited while we were out of town, but it wasn't too far gone to harvest and dry for soup base.
If you aren't growing mushrooms at home you are totally missing out on yum, fun, and some self-sufficiency.

@MCDuncanLab I did this on Amazon boxes during the beginning of the pandemic, LOL.
