I really find it annoying that people keep calling all this garbage "AI" when it is in no way intelligent. It is just a really fancy math equation, nothing more. IIRC the proper term is ANI "Artificial Non-Intelligence". Sadly if companies were honest about that, they couldn't scam you anymore.
@ArcanePigeon@mastodon.social It wasn’t companies that came up with the term btw. The thing is: Any form of AI will be just a really fancy math equation. In computer science, intelligence is how well it can reach a goal. A chess engine is an AI, it is good at winning the game. This is called a narrow intelligence, it is only good at this one domain. A general intelligence would be good at reaching a goal in lots of domains - an example of a general intelligence are humans. Neural networks are an important part of that - something you can train to behave a certain ways. That’s how text recognition AIs got so got.
LLMs are trained to complete texts. But incidentally they (by means of emergence) are actually able to solve problems in other domains. That’s why LLMs are so interesting from a research perspective.
Bottom line: Complain to researchers about the terminology. Companies just jumped on that.
