@vga256@dialup.cafe

I am planning to eventually post in alt.rhubarb again when I release my next hobby projects. I'm not too impressed with some of the busy newsgroups because of trolls and nutters.

Other groups I watch but rarely post to:

rocksolid.nodes.help
sci.crypt
comp.os.plan9 (moderated by plan9 devs)
alt.cyberpunk
alt.folklore.computers
alt.hackers
news.admin.peering
hispagatos.talk
alt.cypherpunks
alt.privacy.anon-server

I follow some others and usually I don't find myself much interested in the discussions.

Modern Usenet is different than its heyday. Messages are generally much more infrequent. It seems more of a bulletin board than a discussion forum these days.

@octade that is the #1 reason why tomonet is not connected to rocksolid's network - it's full of weirdos and conspiracists

@octade @vga256 those are groups that would be on my watch roster. recently i went with a commercial account on usenet and had to really drill down past all the binary dumps to get into discussions. you're right, it's more like a bulletin board but i feel there's merit still

Rocksolid Light is maturing well and I prefer Usenet over the Fediverse. The code maintainer just recently added some BBS games to the portal.

There is a Fediverse/Lemmy group to which you can inform 272 subscribers of related stuff:

usenet_lemmy.ml (replace the underscore with 'at' sign.).

Just put a mention address for the group and your subject as the first line then all the subscribers will see it. Your first line will show up as the subject in the group, so be sure to put the mention addresses below your toot message, not above it. Here is the link to the Lemmy Usenet group where you can get the mention address:

https://lemmy.ml/c/usenet

I didn't put the address in here because I don't want this post going to the group.

@vga256@dialup.cafe

@octade @vga256 thank you for the information. i prefer usenet myself, it's what i grew up on. fediverse is pretty decent but i find better conversations in bbs/usenet format in general. especially with the topic is focused vs a tarpit on something like reddit which imo is centralized garbage

I just read your recent blog article about tomo bbs. I would like to pull the code and poke around. It is an interesting project. Do you have a link to a public code repository?

I have done some theming for the Rocksolid Light portal, so anything connected to that is interesting to me.

Here is my demo mini theme: https://news.octade.net (username: 'guest', password 'guest123', chars in reversed order).

@octade @vga256 sorry to jump in here without context, but i had no idea rocksolid was a thing. i'm working on a small nntp experiment and this is super useful. thank you both.

I was thinking about the same thing earlier today. We had a wonderland with the real internet before FedCorp and CorpGov began strangling it with their addictive insanity platforms.

This morning as I was thinking about the old Internet, I was fiddling around with old gnutella clients and P2P networks. I can't even use gtk-gnutella because its proxy function is hosed. The old standby, Phex, has a borked website. I felt a great loss with Phex no longer being updated.

The torrent ecosystem is so fragmented that it is almost useless for anything other than software piracy and p0rnz, if you want to wade through torrent tracker sites that are loaded with malware.

is still hanging on. There are even a few new groups added in the past year.

There is still hope and light for retro-styled P2P networks:

MLDonkey still works on Linux the last time I checked.

Shareaza and DC++ appear to still be working, although I have not tested them in years.

WinMX has been redone by the original developer into a darknet version and a clearnet version:
DarkMX: https://darkmx.app/
Fopnu: https://fopnu.com/

There is still a niche for old-school web sites:

https://neocities.org/

Project Gutenberg is going strong.

The Internet Archive is hanging on.

Lots of gopher sites have popped up in recent years.

There are still hundreds of bulletin board systems (BBS) in operation.

Not all is lost. You just now have to work hard to find stuff that travels the old ways.
