Learned a new term from Triss Healy’s #everythingopen intro crypto talk, the difference between “salt” (additional padding to defeat dictionary password recovery attacks) and “pepper” (secret salt not stored in your database, making stolen password hashes harder to crack)

I met Triss @nirya Healy at her first LCA five years ago. Stoked af to see her give her first talk EVAR at #EverythingOpen #eo2025. She’s talking on the pitfalls facing junior developers around authentication and cryptography. “I don’t really know cryptography, I just know how to use it a bit”.

In response to this post Tree Sitter, says @croy at #everythingopen, is a multi-language parser that will extract abstract syntax from your half-edited code and let your editor do semantic highlighting (show me the errors) rather than just syntax colorization.
