In response to this post @bicmay Looking into tracking activity of free (as in no monetary cost) apps should differentiate between closed and open source apps. Open source apps respecting our privacy should be praised and not conflated with no-cost spyware. Open source apps with spyware should be looked apon with even more agony. #tech #apps #fitness #infosec #cybersec #data #privacy #foss

Ok mastodon, here is a hard truth: Never quote or comment on something without citing the item in question. Basically don't be like the #climate deniers who just say the data for their graph is on NOAA. Or like the #lgbtq haters who cite spurious heath stats from "The WHO". Or anything like that, we need to do better by showing where, when, how, and why. With sources. Because, how can we trust what you know until we know how you know?

Since we're in the midst of influx #3 and I've moved somewhat recently from another instance, seems like a good time for a re- #introduction! At this point, I'm not exactly a native here, but I'm more like the foundling who's lived here a while and begun to understand the culture a bit. Professionally, I've been in #data, #dataviz, #privacy, and #dataethics for a long time, and outside of that, I putter. Mostly in tech, old houses, words, and food. I'm a fan of the Oxford comma.

@bicmay
Those folks who do not properly get consent must be legislated - or litigated - out of business.
▪️Support privacy initiatives in your jurisdiction.
▪️Educate friends & family about these bad actors.
▪️Claim a consumer-friendly domicile (e.g. EU-based) if you must use such apps.
⭐ And: not all publishers of free apps do this.
Our NGO @stopTDV publishes free prosocial games while respecting the privacy of all users. These bad tech companies harm us through their actions, making it harder for us to do good.

A brief look into the article shows no mention of open source btw. free (as in freedom) apps.
Looking into tracking activity of free (as in no monetary cost) apps should differentiate between closed and open source apps.
Open source apps respecting our privacy should be praised and not conflated with no-cost spyware.
Open source apps with spyware should be looked apon with even more agony.
