aha, a portfolio career as we would call it over here; loads of part-time academic staff (and they are a growing proportion) do exactly this; it was always a common model in further education - I'm currently taking a plastering course, and the tutor is a plasterer who balances off the trenching with a range of plastering jobs - my impression is the teaching, while not brilliantly paid does mean he can pick & choose the jobs he takes

@ChrisMayLA6 Yes, exactly how it works for me!

I find that it is a great solution, because it makes sure that the teacher bounces between the class room and the office, and that the student then benefit from current and developing knowledge.

I think this is one thing the vocational schools I work with and the vocational system has gotten right!
