(the stuff that is mostly burning is Arundo donax... not sure if burning it actually kills it or not).

Ooof... no.

UC: "Arundo is highly flammable and can quickly carry fire along waterways. After a fire, arundo quickly grows back from its roots. With other nearby plants burned by fire, arundo can spread even more quickly, leaving no room for native plants to recover."

Okay, although this is not yet under control, things are quieting down. I'm going to keep my powder dry in case of anything else tonight since this is not headed towards any populated areas.

You can get the important details (but not the nitty gritty) from CAFireScanner (Michael) over on Watch Duty
(ps. looks like they did trigger a formal evacuation in that riverbed).

@ai6yr A plant I both hate and love. No, the fire won't kill it-it will grow back faster than any of the plants competing with it. Like most grasses, it's best friend is fire. It's invasive to boot.

What's to love then? It's the cane that sax, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, bagpipe, etc. reeds are made of. A lot of my career was spent with a bit of Arundo in my face. I've always been able to grab a stalk or two and carve my own reeds.

Not worth the damage it causes.
