@ai6yr If they have the drone's computer they can back track the serial number to where it was sold and possibly who bought it. If it was a DJI drone it had to have a DJI user account.

@ai6yr It sounds as if they may not have enough pieces of the (probably destroyed) drone to identify it. I assume it's just operator stupidity for thinking the law didn't apply to them, and hope they get a hefty fine as a reminder.
Of course, the conspiracy theorist part of me wonders if this is an FBI effort to frighten people from future use of drones.
