Tonight I was skimming the HDMI wiki article for some different information (that I couldn't find, tyvm wikipedia...) and I found out that *digital* video protocols in general do not support closed captions. This includes DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort.
Closed captions are specifically an analog video signal thing. Digital video uses open captions (captions decoded by the source and injected into the video stream, not by the receiver).

The specific information that I was looking for was whether or not HDMI also supported some degree of power delivery and how much power it could support, since that appears to be how Huion is powering their older generation display tablets considering the Kamvas Pro 16 V2 that I got delivers video and power in and digitizer data out via a Mini HDMI interface.
This seems like the kind of weird question @gsuberland would have an answer to... 🤔
