Claim allergies or asthma.
That gets better reactions because they can't just tell you to stop being so sensitive, racist, and /or close minded.

My wife has both allergies and asthma and often her gasping for breaths while I dig her inhaler out of my purse is enough to get people to be like, "oh shit! my bad!"
We don't even have to ask at that point.
