@ai6yr @malachi17RV No joke, can you break squelch on 435 from where you are? Or the Santiago peak box? Both of those may be good options, particularly the Santiago box. Those guys are at least not completely full of themselves and during the OC fires some years ago they were generous for suspending their normal shittalk ops and letting us use the box for emergency nets
@robert @malachi17RV We have some other repeaters we can use (as @W6KME describes), it's just our immediately local ones get shut off every time the wind blows (ie if we had a big emergency someone could get out to someone -- probably for me all the way out to Catalina Island). But the local hams all go in the dark during emergencies because the normal repeater frequencies all go dead.

@ai6yr @malachi17RV There’s always 435 and K6GOD I guess. They never seem to go down because the lid operations cannot be interrupted I guess?

@ai6yr @malachi17RV Hell, it stayed up with the antenna half destroyed too. Power should not be the limiting factor in SoCal. You don’t even need to count on a diesel generator. 1kWh of battery storage can run a repeater indefinitely in SoCal if you have solar generation. You don’t even need fancy lithium batteries, cheap lead acid stuff can do this.
@robert @malachi17RV Yep, for sure. I have a repeater (alas, very low level and no one uses it --- footprint is ridiculously small LOL) which has operated on old lead acid batteries and 400W of solar panels for years and years.

@ai6yr Sounds like the operator and maintaining club needs to talk to N2GE in Asheville. It is bizarre to me that there isn’t a solar array on that battery backup system by the way. Two 220W panels is way more than enough to maintain full cycle repeater operations, and that costs less than a group breakfast.
@robert EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!
