Also: I am not the UK government. I didn’t create this policy or the app. I cannot do anything about your complaints or concerns about this.
I used my spare phone to apply, but you do you.

Also, with my (recently issued) US passport, I had the best luck scanning the chip with the top of my iPhone near the top of the INSIDE of the BACK cover of the passport (contrary to the app’s instructions).

Reminder if you’re unaware: most US travelers to the UK (including for flight connections) will need an “electronic travel authorization” starting January 8th, or you may be denied boarding for your flight or turned away at immigration.
It costs GBP 10 (about 13 bucks) and is valid for two years. The easiest way to apply is with the “UK ETA” iPhone or Android app, which scans your passport and face and takes your photo and money. Approval can take 3 days, but mine took less than 2 minutes.

@CStamp @emd yes. Though some applications are approved almost instantly, but there’s no guarantee.

@drukac @irizoris Ah. I was completely unable to get there a couple days ago.

@CStamp @emd I think the likely scenario is that the airline will send your info to the UK when you check in, and if you don't have an ETA, they'll tell them to deny boarding until you get one. And if you can't apply and get it approved then and there, you're probably screwed.

They are on Bluesky now

There is a Tim Cook parody account over there too. People are attacking it for 1 million reasons. They are doing so by replying to 10 day old posts.
Mind boggling

Back in the day on Twitter, there was (and maybe still is, dunno) an account called "scotusblog" that posted summaries of current US Supreme Court decisions. I think it was a small law firm. Their replies were completely full of angry and indignant complaints, threats, and insults from people who assumed
- that they were the Court itself and;
- that tweeting at the Court would get them to change their decisions.
I understand now a little bit what that must have been like.

Your threat to me to not visit the UK because of their new electronic travel authorization requirement is not likely to get me to change the policy. Try offering me a large bribe instead, maybe.

@mattdm Do it before later this year, when the EU plans to do the same thing. Also, please note the following: https://federate.social/@mattblaze/113784912498913481

@SteveBellovin If you follow the links on that page, it circularly sends you back to the page telling you to download the app (or at least did a couple days ago).

Please direct your complaints about the bad attitude reflected in my posts to the dean at my university, who will give them all due consideration.
(That's George Mason University).

Now someone else is yelling at me for "promoting air travel which contributes to climate change".
I think you either meant to include a comma after 'air travel' or use the word 'that' in place of 'which'. But your complaint has been noted and a ticket has been opened.

@badtux @CStamp EU passport holders seem to have a reprieve from the UK ETA for a few more months.
