I’m disappointed (but not surprised) at the steady flow of #LAFire #tragedyPorn on social media: rapid-fire collages made of footage of burning houses, accompanied by dramatic or sad music, incoherently stitched together, sometimes even cynically including obviously AI-generated footage. Most of them include some sort of drone shots, even though all flight (including drones) has been prohibited in firefighting areas. As is the case in all disasters, these kinds of videos are harmful. While there are legitimate videos from actual victims who post their experiences, they soon get outnumbered by videos taken by outsiders exploiting the situation, then compiled into self-serving viral collections. They are barely informational, not at all educational, and always exploitative. If you see one of those videos in your feed, please don’t give them engagement. Block the creator if you can. Report them to your moderators and tell them you don’t appreciate such nonsense.
