"Four diseases, all connected, now threaten the nation’s social and moral health: racism, poverty, environmental devastation, and the war economy—sanctified by the heresy of Christian nationalism. Since the 2016 presidential election, when white rage propelled a candidate endorsed by the Ku Klux Klan into the White House, racism has been more prominent in public life." https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2018/02/a-new-poor-peoples-campaign/552503/ #race #racism #poverty #class #labor #environment #economics #VotingRights #CivilRights #PublicHealth

More tales from the low-wage end of the UK economy, with it would seem, the Living Wage Foundation allowing itself to be used to hide the extent of low wage contracts in outsourcing firms.... The Q. is whether one believes the LWF is 'working' with these providers to raise the wages of workers, or whether they are being used as (innocent) cover to hide the continued exploitation of the 'slaves'? You can make up your own mind!

Britain's housing crisis is having a major impact on low- and middle-income households (which we know), but when compared to the plight of similar households in other European countries that negative impact is much starker & reflects, of course, the inequality of UK society. This is hardly surprising, but reinforces the need to urgently find some way to start to resolve the housing crisis... there's n shortage of ideas, just a lack of real action!

Prevention is (almost always) cheaper than treatment, and homelessness does not break this rule. Economists recently used a randomized control trial to estimate the effectiveness of giving households on the brink of homelessness cash to prevent it, $2000 on average. The results of this temporary assistance were a 73% reduction in the risk of homelessness after one year and that each dollar spent generated $2.47 in benefits to the community. https://news.nd.edu/news/targeted-prevention-helps-stop-homelessness-before-it-starts/
