Aside from being in Patton's army, I don't know units.
My uncle was a machine gunner because of his poor eyesight.
My wife's uncle was an ambulance driver and died in a non-combat vehicle accident. His parents were notified of his death on VE day.

Yes. In order to qualify as a rifleman, you have to achieve a certain score at the range. He couldn't see the target well enough to aim properly with a rifle. The standard was different for machine gunners.
