@ChrisMayLA6 Ths only applies to 26 of the 27 EU countries. Irish citizens don't have to pay this fee nor do they have to register or even have a passport to enter the Uk

Aha, thanks for that; part of the Windsor Framework I presume?
@ChrisMayLA6 Yes and no. Actually dates back to the Common Travel Area agreement of 1922 renewed in 2019 by a memorandum of understanding between the two governments prompted by Brexit, so it predates and postdates the UKs membership of the EEC/EU
