AI6YR Ben's Post

Hmm, looks like I need to buy a new weather station. Anemometer is jammed. Going to WD-40 the thing. (Update: spinning, but the sensor inside -- rotary sensor -- apparently also jammed. Probably bugs and dirt in there... going to just do the station upgrade, this station's plastic is breaking into tiny microplastic bits, and it's been a decade almost for it, and I only paid $25 for it).

@ai6yr is it a Davis by any chance? Theirs have a lot of user replaceable parts

@vxo No, it's a now (old) Acurite 4-in-1. Cheap (plus I got it shipping damaged and paid $25 for it... so....). The plastic is cracking LOL, it's time for a replacement. The lubrication did not work, the cups are spinning but it's toast.

@ai6yr
and here I thought you'd taken up beekeepping so you could use honey forevermore and never jam again.

@ai6yr Doesn’t WD40 just get sticky over time?

@andybrwn I squirted some Triflow in there, and now it's spinning... but the sensor is dirty or broken. This is old and the plastic is cracking on this.

Ecowitt/Fine Offset. Man, there are a helluva lot of options.

@ai6yr I picked up the Ecowitt station, and just recently got my Davis one working well (although I need to dig out some ancient software to get it spooling to the internet again). I expect the Davis would be more precise, but for my purposes the Ecowitt is good enough. Rain gauge seems overly sensitive to me. But other than the battery, near no maintenance plus you can add a bunch of other sensor options (which I have). Seems to be good value for the $$.

@ai6yr your best value I've found is to buy a large mix-and-match batch of stuff from Ecowitt directly, as their shipping can be a smidge steep, but they do quantity discounts and ship things together. I've been happy with the hardware and the software hasn't been bad

@ai6yr I’ve got a Davis one that’s 20 years old and still working!
