FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Australia Post rebrands as National Parcel Switching Network.

The 20th and early 21st Centuries saw a massive change in Australia Post's mission. Letters, formerly the backbone of postal traffic are now almost nonexistent. Small parcels comprise 92% of postal deliveries.

In the mid 20th Century freight transport was revolutionised by Intermodal Containerised Shipping, where goods travel from source to destination packed in a container that is passed from truck to train to ship with no concern about its contents.

As the then Postmaster General's Department and later as successor organisations Telecom Australia and Telstra, we oversaw a similar revolution in telecommunications, with Circuit-Switched voice calls being replaced by Packet Switched Networks and the concept of Network Neutrality.

Around the turn of the century several disparate packet switched networks were brought under the sole management of the National Broadband Network.

Building on this successful strategy, Australia Post (under our new brand NPSN) will nationalise the infrastructure of various train, truck, air, sea and "last kilometer" providers to build a single national network of parcel-switched micro-rail corridors. Solar powered magnetic-levitation micro-rail will accomodate standard sized packages in form factors ranging from V6 up to V2 (the volumetric equivalent of the well known A-series paper sizes). A number of existing pneumatic-tube local networks will also merge with the solar-maglev network, under a hybrid tube-to-the-kerb strategy in some neighbourhoods.

Existing and new retail courier businesses will utilise the NPSN
for package transport, replacing the obsoleted truck and aircraft fleets with carbon neutral solar maglev.

NPSN looks forward to providing Australians with same-day-parcel routing nationwide, with 30-minute end-to-end service levels in major cities.

@Unixbigot oh man, add in parcel-to-the-locker and I'm sold.

(One of my first "real" jobs was as a supermarket cashier, long ago enough that we still used pneumatic tubes next to each register to send excess cash to the cash office. You'd write up the slip, bundle it and the cash with an elastic band, and pop it into a screw-top clear capsule that slotted into the open end of pneumatic tube and got sucked away to the back office. Part of training included a "don't stick your arm up there" speech.)

@Unixbigot not impressed. Experience says that they would deem our suburb too minor to service :(

@leadegroot ask your post office if the Hybrid Maglev Camel service is right for you.
