I feel like what Ed's put his finger on here is probably an inevitable consequence of runaway capitalism:
"Things are being made linearly worse in the pursuit of growth in every aspect of our digital lives, and it’s because everything must grow, at all costs, at all times, unrelentingly, even if it makes the technology we use every day consistently harmful.”

Ed does a better job than anybody else I've ever read at distilling exactly what it is about using modern Internet technology that's so obnoxious, and why that is. (Cory Doctorow goes into more detail, but Ed's blog post is the best summary ever.)

(and to @fere's point, a 42-minute read isn't *exactly* a summary, but it's shorter than Cory's book on Enshittification. :))
