Graham Sutherland / Polynomial's Post

anyone got recommendations for books that go into technical detail about the physical security design elements and defeat processes relating to modern strongrooms (bank vaults) and other high security safes?

I recently read Safecracker by Dave McOmie, which covered the general features at a high level, but I'd like something a bit more detailed and technically focused. I have High Security Mechanical Locks by Pulford too, but that's focused on locks specifically rather than strongroom phys-sec.

in particular I've struggled to find anything at all on the materials science and engineering side of it, beyond some very high level descriptions of hardplate construction that barely went beyond what I could already discern from marketing copy.

for example I know that some vendors construct their hardplate additively using alternating weld beads made of different materials, which is extremely difficult to drill through because of the differential tool pressure generated at the tip of the bit.

but that's a really high-level description that doesn't go into the details of material choice, metallurgy, testing, etc. which is the really interesting part.

that said, I'm not just interested in the materials science. info on construction techniques, evolution of various attacks and defenses, relocker designs (particularly glass ones, they're cool!), etc. would all be great to read. it's such a fascinating subject area.

@gsuberland Oxygen-rich cutting torch would be my first thought.

@gsuberland I have Locks Safes and Security by Tobias. Won it somewhere. If I can get it up and running again there is a wealth of safe info. If you are looking for something in particular I probably have it.

@Sempf I also realised I have a copy. unfortunately it only vaguely touches on material selection and construction (hardplate is only referenced twice in the whole book) and the rest is either light on detail or clearly outdated.
