@timrichards I get that, but I can also see it as a confidence thing.

Experienced travellers (and especially travel writers) have far more confidence going to places that are a bit "out there"*. As you travel more, you're more willing to take risks as you get familiar with places and processes - same with most things in life.

Don't really know how you can broaden the horizons of people that don't have that confidence/experience.

@timrichards It makes sense, to a degree, to me at least.

For the vast majority of people, an overseas holiday is something you get to do maybe a handful of times in your life. So when you do one, you want to maximise the possibility of having a good time - which means taking away unknowns. Your friends when to [PLACE A] and have given you a bit of a brief about it so you know, sort of, what to expect, plus they said they liked it so of course you're more likely to want to visit [PLACE A] yourself, as opposed to [PLACE B] about which you know nothing/comparitively little.

@timrichards This is one of the things I find to be a bit cognitiviely dissonant about travel writing.

Like, so much of it is "check out this place you've never heard of that's actually amazing" followed some time later by "well this place was great but now it's shit because people go there."

I...what did you expect would happen?

I don't know how to square that circle.

When I left the office at 4.00, my car said it was 38 degrees.

Half an hour later when I arrived at school holiday care to collect the kiddo it said 22.
