It's truly not hyperbole to say that the george floyd uprising changed my attitude about firearms. turns out that when you have friends getting their voicemail filled up with death threats, a steady stream of fascists from all over the country prowling your town, not to mention the local trigger happy fascists in the form of cops and national guard occupying the city and shooting at people for standing on their own porch after curfew.... guns suddenly become a useful tool.
anyway, if that hadn't changed my mind, the book Force and Freedom: Black Abolitionist and the Politics of Violence would have. It's a very thorough history of the role violence played in the 19th century abolitionist movement. if you're interested in a more nuanced view of firearms than "scary! bad!", i recommend it: https://annas-archive.org/md5/9ff19ec9c51bddd9e1410b4f0a9e1e8a
