unfortunately this is going to be the unsatisfying ending where I don't find out what's actually up with it internally, 'cos the cable has hefty molded connectors and my hands are already beat to shit and scratched up from doing the NAS rebuild. really don't wanna spend 20 minutes hacking at it with a box cutter and probably cutting myself in the process.
