@0x00string At low speeds, it won't really matter, but for higher frequencies, the differences in impedance can introduce enough noise ('differential mode noise') to cause phase problems -- signals can arrive out of phase with one another and become corrupted.
Common mode noise can have capacitance issues where wires act like antennas, but it depends on your circuit. Keeping traces short and signals separate from sources is key.
